What just happened? 2020 at Humbleteam

As the readers of our blog and newsletter know, Humbleteam is very, uh, humble. Which is why we usually don’t talk about ourselves much.

But at the end of this special year of 2020, we thought that it might be worth saying a few words about how it’s all played out for us, and what’s happening next year. Humbly, and just in case you were wondering.

Humble beginnings

It’s been just over four years since Anton and I met while working at a huge software company in Prague. A year later, in September 2017, we decided it was time to start a company that would focus on product design for startups.

With inspiration from Kendrick Lamar, a name was found. And then the whole thing took off fast. In fact, so fast that we were even surprised ourselves. (But then again, very humble, remember?)

Since then we’ve grown pretty steadily. At the end of last year there were 10 people on the Humbleteam, along with a bunch of contractors. We had delivered around 80 projects to our faithful clients, many of whom kept coming back for more. So far, so good.

You won’t believe what happened next

When 2020 started showing its true nature we were as spooked as everybody else. But even in these Difficult Times™, Humbleteam has continued to flourish. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Despite record-breaking crises and disasters, new and exciting projects kept coming our way, and people too. There are now 30 people on our core team, and with an increasingly diversified talent stack — 3D and motion design, copywriting, communications and more — we’re working on more complex projects than ever.

Some of the things we’ve been working on this year:

  • Lítačka, an e-ticket for public transport in Prague
  • Royal Caribbean, an app for the world’s biggest cruise company
  • Mollie, one of the fastest growing payment processors in Europe
  • Native, the only multilingual messaging platform featuring premium, real-time translation
  • Piñata, an app that helps renters earn rewards and save on everyday expenses
  • Brigit, a financial health app
  • Boostsurfing, the world’s first electric surf fin

We’ve continued our long-term partnerships with companies like Nauto, Nexar, Stoovo, Marcel, Scentbird, Sadapay and others. And we also started consulting for various startup accelerators. (We’ll talk more about that later.)

And then there’s all the NDA stuff we did that we’re not allowed to talk about yet. You know, emerging fintech unicorns, bank enterprises and leading car manufacturers in Europe. That sort of thing. It’s all classified for now, but we’ll share it with you if and when we can. Promise.

Last but not least, we were happy to partner with safe.site, a non-profit platform that provides help and resources to sex workers and victims of sex trafficking. They do good work, and we’ve been happy to help. You can check the work in progress here.

Wait, there’s more!

We built a brand new website for ourselves! And we’re still building it! We’ve been working on it for almost a year, and it’s still in progress, with lots of cool case studies coming soon. Stay tuned!

We taught people! We organized two online courses with the Creative People agency, and two webinars with WeWork, attended by about 2k people who wanted to learn about design.

We shared secrets! We shared 22 articles with our newsletter subscribers, covering things like how to raise capital, how to create a great landing page, and much more. With a new post every two weeks, there is always something exciting to discover. You should sign up.

We got stickers! In November we got our own branded stickers, perfect for sticking on your laptop, microwave, or even your forehead if you’re brave. Take a look.

Good housekeeping

In between all those projects, we also took time to look after the heart of the agency — our own humble team.

With all those new people joining all the time, we introduced a comprehensive onboarding process, with several educational videos on how we work. And to make things easier for everyone, we also built a complete design library, and a new Figma structure — finally!

Every HumbleTuesday, one of our team members shares interesting insights, from how to do 3D design to becoming a digital nomad, and lots of things in between.

Is this starting to sound like an ad for careers at Humbleteam? That must be a coincidence.

What happens now?

One of the things we’re most excited about for 2021 is our upcoming “Humblesuite” of essential services for startups.

We’ve been working with startups pretty much since day one, and we’ve found that almost all of them have similar basic needs. Things like help pitching an MVP, analytics audits, design workshops, validation of product hypotheses, and so on.

So we decided to create fast and easy-to-implement solutions for as many of these needs as we can, based on our experience working with 120 startups over the years. They’ll be available soon on our website, and startups will be able to pick the services they need, like in an online store.

This is how it all ends

As this year draws to a close, we want to thank you for being with us in these Difficult Times™. We’re very grateful to everyone who reads this, especially people like you, who read all the way through to the end!

A very special thanks goes out to all our great clients. We literally wouldn’t be here without you, and we look forward to seeing you in person in 2021.

(And if you’re not one of our clients yet, that’s okay. You know where to find us.)

Happy holidays and a happy new year.
