UX/UI design · sports

UX/UI design for sports, built for matchday.

Traffic arrives in a spike, content expires at the final whistle, and half your users are standing in a stadium. We design club and league products for those conditions, against a benchmark of 27 leading sports apps rerun every four weeks.

Why clubs and leagues bring us in

We track the category continuously

27 leading sports apps benchmarked every four weeks and audited feature by feature, and 12 fan-behavior trends published from 100 interviews. Whatever you plan to build next, we know how the leading apps already do it.

Matchday is a design constraint

One-handed use, poor connectivity, sunlight, noise, and everything happening in the same 15 minutes. We design for the stand first and test one-handed, on cellular.

The revenue is in the boring screens

Ticket transfer, seat selection, wallet, renewal, half-time upsell. These flows carry the revenue, so they get the design attention first.

One system, every fan surface

Club site, matchday app, ticketing portal, in-stadium screens. A fan moves between all four in the same hour, so we design one component set that serves them instead of four that drift apart.

Fans compare your app with everything else on their phone.

So our benchmark covers streaming, retail, and social apps alongside sport.

Types of sports products we build

From the first clickable prototype to a product used on matchday.

  • 01 Matchday and live Score, timeline, lineups, and what to do at half time, on one screen.
  • 02 Ticketing and entry Buy, transfer, resell, and prove entry at a gate with no signal.
  • 03 Streaming and video Pre-roll, quality switching, catch-up, and browsing without spoilers.
  • 04 Fantasy and prediction Team picks, deadlines, scoring, and the reason to come back next week.
  • 05 Membership and loyalty Tiers, renewals, presale windows, and what a member gets first.
  • 06 Retail and merchandise Kit launches, sizing, and a checkout that survives a drop.
  • 07 Club and league sites Fixtures, news, and the pages that carry sponsor inventory.
  • 08 Fan data and CRM screens The internal views your ticketing and marketing teams work in all week.

Designed around real fan behavior

Three findings from our own research.

Finding 01

Sessions arrive in a spike

Most of a season’s sessions land in narrow windows around kick-off. The home screen has to answer “what is happening right now” in one glance. History, shop, and membership sit behind that.

Finding 02

Ticketing is a trust flow

Transfer to a friend, resell, prove entry at a gate with no signal, get a refund when a fixture moves. Each of these moments tells a fan whether the club is competent, and each one is designable.

Finding 03

Streaming is judged in the first 6 seconds

Time to picture, quality switching, catch-up on what was missed, and knowing the score is not spoiled before pressing play. We design the pre-roll experience with the same care as the player.

How a sports engagement runs

Planned around the season calendar.

01

Benchmark

Your app against the 27 we already track, plus the competitors your fans actually use.

02

Fan research

Interviews with the segments that matter: season ticket, casual, overseas, family.

03

Matchday flows

Ticket, entry, live, half time, post match. Designed for the stand, tested on a phone.

04

Interface and system

Components that survive a rebrand, a kit launch, and a sponsor change without a redesign.

05

Ship into the calendar

Releases planned around fixtures, so nothing risky lands the week of a derby.

Questions?

Which sports organizations have you worked with?

Formula 1 and the NBA are in our client marquee, and our sport practice page covers work with leading EU and UK football clubs. On the AI side, we work on the official World Rally Championship app. Some names are under NDA; on a call, we tell you who we can name and show you the work.

What do you already know about fan behavior?

We publish it. 12 trends for 2026 from 100 fan interviews, plus a feature-by-feature audit of 27 leading sports apps. Both are free on this site.

Can you design ticketing if we use a third-party provider?

Yes, and it is the common case. We design the fan-facing layer around your provider’s constraints: transfer, resale, entry, refunds. We are explicit about which improvements need a provider change and which are design changes.

How do you handle the traffic spike around kick-off?

As a design problem first. We decide what the screen must answer during the spike, design degraded states for poor networks, and keep the key actions reachable one-handed. Then we work with your engineers on caching and queues.

Do you work with leagues and rights holders, or only clubs?

Both. Formula 1 and the NBA are in our client marquee, and we work on the official World Rally Championship app. League work usually starts further upstream than club work: the shared system that clubs, broadcast partners, and sponsors all build on, rather than a single app.

How do you know whether the design worked?

We agree the numbers before the work starts — time to get through a gate, ticket transfer completion, time to picture on a stream, renewal rate — and we read them after release. If one did not move, we say so and tell you what we think it costs to move it.

Tell us what you are shipping.
